The Back Story:
The Berreth family has owned their farm since 1902. Jim Berreth’s father purchased it in 1947, and Jim grew up there before graduating from high school in Eureka, South Dakota. He went on to attend South Dakota State University, where he met his wife, Lori. After college, he worked for three years as a loan officer at the Federal Land Bank. In 1981, when his father retired, Berreth returned to take over the farm.
“We raised everything from cattle, a few sheep at one time. We had alfalfa, soybeans, corn, wheat, malting barley, sunflowers, flax. We raised everything,” said Berreth. “It was special to me because it was my own and all the work I put into it is what I got out of it.”
“The hardest times were the droughts and the blizzards during the middle of calving,” he said.
Jim retired at age 69, after 45 years.
“I just decided it was time for somebody else to take over,” Berreth said.
Berreth and his wife, Lori, plan to spend more time visiting their family.
“We’ve got a daughter and two grandsons in Portland (Oregon). We’ve got a son who has four granddaughters five years and under. We’ll visit them more,” Berreth said. “My wife and I do like to travel some, and so we'll be doing more of that.”
“There's other farmers that ask me to run their equipment during seeding and harvesting, and I'll probably do that as it fits me,” he said.
Jim's favorite item up for sale is his John Deere 7520 Tractor with a John Deere 741 Self-Leveling Loader.
“The loader tractor is a 2007 tractor with 1,800 hours on it. That's really low hours for a tractor that age,” Berreth said. “It’s part of a good line of older machinery.”
